How It Works

The calculator stacks a fixed amount of investment income on top of employment income and estimates personal tax under the modeled rules for four income types: eligible Canadian dividends, non-eligible dividends, capital gains, and interest (or similar fully taxable income).

Gross-up and dividend tax credit mechanics are included for Canadian dividends. Corporate-level tax and foreign tax credits are outside the model.

Each income type is run through the same employment-income base so the comparison isolates how the investment slice is taxed. Results show estimated tax paid and after-tax cash kept for that slice.

Brackets and credits follow the CRA-oriented tables registered for the selected jurisdiction in the tax package for the current model year.

What It Leaves Out

  • Corporate tax inside a holding company is not modeled.
  • Alternative minimum tax, foreign-tax credits, and timing elections are omitted.
  • The 65 or older view includes a full OAS pension, the age credit and the OAS recovery tax. GIS, spouse amounts and other credits are not modeled.

FAQ

Canadian corporations already pay tax on their corporate profits. The federal and provincial dividend tax credits provide credit for that corporate tax, which can result in very low or even negative effective personal tax rates at modest incomes.

At higher incomes. The eligible dividend gross-up raises your taxable income before the dividend tax credit is applied, and the credit covers less of the tax as brackets rise. Capital gains are only half taxable, so they can end up with the lower rate. The chart shows where the two lines cross for your province.
