TFSA vs RRSP
The same dollar can leave a different after-tax result in a TFSA and an RRSP. The gap comes from the tax on the way out, the refund on the way in, and whether that refund is invested.

What Do the Two Accounts Actually Shelter?
A TFSA contribution is made with money that has already been taxed. Growth inside the account is not taxed, and a withdrawal is not taxed. An RRSP contribution is deducted from income. Growth is not taxed while it stays inside, and a withdrawal is taxed as income.
For 2026, the TFSA dollar limit is $7,000. New RRSP room is 18% of the prior year's earned income, up to $33,810, before unused room and pension adjustments. Those limits decide how much you can add. They do not decide which account leaves more after tax.
When Does the RRSP Comparison Depend on Two Tax Rates?
An RRSP puts off tax. If the rate you save on the contribution is higher than the rate you pay on the withdrawal, and you invest the refund, the RRSP can finish ahead of a TFSA holding the same contribution. If the two rates are the same and the refund is invested, the accounts are much closer.
Spending the refund breaks that comparison. The TFSA keeps the whole contribution compounding. The RRSP keeps the contribution, but the refund is gone.
What Can a Single Contribution Comparison Miss?
Room, carry-forward, and a pension adjustment are personal. So is the effect of a withdrawal on OAS recovery tax or GIS. A TFSA withdrawal does not add to taxable income. An RRSP or RRIF withdrawal does.
Early retirement can make that difference practical. Years before CPP and OAS start are often funded from savings, and extra taxable income in those years is not free.
- Will the refund be invested, or spent?
- Is the expected tax rate in retirement higher, lower, or about the same?
- Could the withdrawal raise income enough to matter for benefits?
